September to December is the time of year when all A-Level students and all college careers advisors are busy working through UCAS applications. Whilst the UCAS deadline is not actually until the 15th January, we all want to get the personal statements and applications in before Christmas for two reasons; to enjoy the Christmas break as much as possible and to leave time to focus on the all-important January exams.
Whilst there are some exceptional careers advisors working in schools across the country, unfortunately the funding just isn’t in place to guarantee an adequate service. So much so, the Chairs of the Education, Skills and the Economy Committee has accused the government of “burying their heads in the sand while careers guidance fails young people”. This is not reassuring for pupils or parents.
There are also more options than ever before for young people. Apprenticeships anyone? Degree apprenticeships that allow college leavers to receive a salary while they learn grew by more than 50% this year. This is a remarkable increase for a career path that barely registered on the agenda a few years ago.
